A Harrogate curry house has been named the best in the region at an annual awards ceremony hosted by Masterchef’s Greg Wallace. 

Starbeck Tandoori beat stiff competition from across Yorkshire and the Humber – including the other three finalists, all in York – to win the title.

It was awarded by the Bangladesh Caterers Association for innovation, presentation of food, hygiene standards and customer service. 

Owner Burhan Uddin Khan collected the award from hosts Greg Wallace and TV presenter Tasmin Lucia-Khan at the black-tie event at the Park Plaza London. 

Established in 1960, the BCA represents more than 12,000 UK curry houses, which employ over 100,000 people and turn over £4.2bn a year.

Weetons sets date for Christmas evening

Weetons

Luxury food hall Weetons will stage its annual Christmas evening on Thursday, November 17.

Independent suppliers will be showcasing products to try at the shop, on Harrogate’s West Park, from 6pm to 8pm.

There will also be live music, complimentary Prosecco, mulled wine and mince pies at the event, which is open to everyone.

Commercial litigation solicitor Alex Harrison joins McCormicks

Harrogate engineering consultants expand

Harrogate-based building services engineering practice, Tate Consulting, has expanded into Belfast.

The move has created five new jobs with Belfast-born director Jim Lee set to continue splitting his time between Belfast and Harrogate.

This will be the fourth office for the company, which provides commercial engineering solutions.

It has already secured a number of contracts, including Belfast Waterside, a development of 500 homes by MODA Living and a logistics facility in Dublin.

Aaron Stevenson and Kevin Gallagher have also joined the team as associate director and mechanical associate.

Jim Lee, Tate consulting director, said:

“This expansion will give us a valuable foothold and added resource in Belfast as well as facilitating further expansion into the Dublin market.

Harrogate cafe opens deli shop

Café di Mamma Amelia on Harrogate’s King’s Road has expanded by opening a second shop a few doors down to sell deli foods and home-cooked ready meals.

Owner Antonio Cavinato said recent success had spurred him on to open a second business, similarly named Cucina di Mamma Amelia.

Both businesses are named after Mr Cavinato’s mother, who lives in Italy. The shop will sell a variety of meals to finish at home including the family’s secret recipe tiramisu, pizzas, lasagna and cannolis.

The new deli has allowed Mr Cavinato to hire two part-time staff and keep on his two full-time staff spreading the four staff and himself across both businesses. He said:

“When the opportunity came out of the blue to open a smaller business on King’s Road I came back from Italy and started small, but demand has soon outstripped what we could do in the small shop, and when No 148 became available, I decided to just go for it!

“Harrogate is a great town to run a business in, there is lots of support from locals for a small business, and I will now be running between the coffee shop and the deli up and down the street, so my gym will miss me!”

Hot Seat: Harrogate Spring Water’s new boss faces old dilemma

Few local chief executives face a trickier task in the months ahead than the one confronting the new man in charge of Harrogate Spring Water.

Richard Hall has to convince a sceptical public and councillors that they should support plans to fell trees in the Pinewoods so the company can expand its factory and produce more plastic bottles.

Trees, plastic and a climate crisis are a volatile mix, as shown last year when more than 400 people objected to a larger expansion scheme put forward by the company that was ultimately rejected.

The campaign attracted national media coverage and a high profile champion in TV presenter Julia Bradbury.

Mr Hall hopes the outcome will be different this time and is keen to strike a conciliatory tone as the company prepares to consult on its revised plans before submitting a planning application.

He says:

“Expansion plans can often be challenged by local communities and that’s something that is not unusual per se, but we could have handled it better and we could have consulted better with the local community so there’s definitely a lesson to learn for us.

“We’ve got an opportunity to be much more open. There is an opportunity for people to come and talk to us, look at the plan and give us feedback.”

Mr Hall is also keen to frame the debate in a wider context than trees versus plastic.

“It’s not really a question of how water is packaged — it’s a question of how food and other beverages are packaged. So if we are asked what are we doing to reduce the impact of packaging, I’d be very happy to respond to that because we are doing significant things.”

He mentions several environmental initiatives Harrogate Spring Water supports and says the main issue is recycling rates. Harrogate Spring Water’s bottles are made using 50% recycled plastic and glass and Mr Hall says this would increase if more recycled products were available.

Water, he says, is “the healthiest beverage” and the company’s national reputation should be a source of local pride, not to mention the fact that expansion would create 30 jobs.

Packaging, he adds, is a separate debate. But he knows the argument will be tough.

“I accept there will be some discussion around it. It’s a hot topic. People are passionate about the climate. I just hope we get a balanced debate.”

New era

Mr Hall’s appointment marks a new era at Harrogate Spring Water, which can produce 36,000 bottles of 500 millilitre water per hour at its factory.

The company was bought two years ago by French multinational Danone but former managing director James Cain, who had been in charge for 15 years, continued to lead the business until Mr Hall arrived. Mr Cain is now a minority shareholder.

The takeover and expansion plans haven’t been the only issues to contend with lately.

Covid hit hard. According to Harrogate Spring Water’s latest annual accounts, gross profit for the year ending March 31, 2020, was £8.3m but crashed to £1.9m for the nine months to December 31, 2020 due to the closure of many places that sell bottled water, such as convenience stores, hotels, airports and train stations.

Mr Hall says business is now “recovering to pre-covid levels”.

Brexit, he says, impacted the company “a little bit” but nowhere near as much as covid. Inflation is a major concern now.

The company has stopped exporting water to Russia since the Ukraine war started but overseas sales account for only a fraction of business.

Last year the business withdrew its sponsorship of Yorkshire County Cricket Club amid the club’s racism row and has not renewed it, but it continues to be the official water of Royal Ascot.

Despite its national reputation, Mr Hall describes Harrogate Spring Water, which employs 78 staff, as a “small, local brand” compared with international brands like Volvic, and he doesn’t see that changing.

“We will look at expansion plans in the UK and Ireland. There’s lots of space to grow.”

Harrogate, he says, should be proud of its spa heritage.

“There are not many towns in the UK that can talk about their spa heritage. Harrogate is the top one. The water you find here is delicious.”

Danone all his life

Mr Hall, a keen runner, joined Danone in Tokyo a month after finishing university in Japan. He has remained with the company since. He is fluent in Japanese, where he lived for 25 years and has a Japanese wife.

As vice-president of Danone’s UK and Ireland business, his remit extends far beyond Harrogate Spring Water’s factory on Harlow Moor Road (pictured below).

Mr Hall lives in Oxford and expects to visit Harrogate twice a month.

His credentials are impeccable, having worked on other Danone water brands Evian and Volvic, as well as Yakult.

Being part of Danone, he says, brings “access to expertise and knowledge” but he constantly stresses the importance of the company retaining the local feel nurtured by the Cains. A new strategic plan is being created.

“The Cain family did a great job in building the brand. I want to look after it and grow it further. We are talking about a premium brand; we are not talking about a mass market brand.”

But how much the company grows will depend largely on whether its planning application to expand by two acres in the Pinewoods is successful.

It plans to revive a 2017 application that was granted outline permission, which means the principle of development is already established but the final details are not.

Having outline permission will make the process easier but little is likely to be straightforward in such emotional terrain. Last year, protestor Sarah Gibbs stood outside the council offices dressed as a tree, and she has been back putting up banners around the town, saying there can be no mitigation for the loss of woodland.

Mr Hall reiterates he welcomes debate and that the company will listen. Would he talk to Julia Bradbury? He looks at his PR adviser who says he can’t see why not.

There is likely to be plenty of talking and listening before councillors decide whether the plant can be extended. Mr Hall will have to call on all his skill, expertise and years of experience if the company is to secure the outcome it wants.

Used car dealership launches in Harrogate as second hand market booms

A new used car dealership has launched in Harrogate which aims to make buying a vehicle an “enjoyable and relaxed experience”.

Carlingo, which is based in the former Evans Halshaw showroom on Wetherby Road, has more than 120 cars in stock, ranging from a Nissan Micra to  Porsche Macan.

The company says it believes in “quality not quantity” and prides itself on finding cars that have the most desired optional extras. These include  a panoramic sunroof, heated seats, sat nav and upgraded alloys.

The second hand market grew 11.5 per cent on the back of the short supply of new vehicles, with 777,997 more sales than the previous year, according to figures released by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT).

Businesses stage sleepout to campaign against homelessness 

Eight local businesses completed a sleepout with CEO Sleepout UK to raise awareness of hidden homelessness in the district. 

The group of business leaders spent the night sleeping outdoors at Harrogate Rugby Club, and have raised almost £15,000 for CEO Sleepout UK, Ripon YMCA, Harrogate District Foodbank and Harrogate RUFC. 

The North Yorkshire based companies that took part were Nicholls Tyreman Estate Agents, Hudgell Solicitors, Ripon YMCA, Pavilions of Harrogate, Jorvik Design Group, Stratstone BMW, Carson Homes and Harrogate Borough Council.   

The participants included CEO of Hudgell Solicitors Rachel Di Clemente, Nicholls Tyreman director James Tyreman, and director of Jorvik Design Group Ady Rhodes.

“It was a tough night and surprisingly cold, but by bringing those with lived experience to share their stories, and hearing about the vital work of charities on the frontline, we unlock understanding, compassion and inspire our business leaders to use their power to create greater social value.” 

CEO Sleepout stages fundraising events across the UK, and has raised £3 million for more than 100 charities.  


Student from Knaresborough achieves unprecedented full marks in hairdressing exam 

A hairdressing student from Knaresborough has achieved full marks in her practical exam.  

Penny Ledgeway, who is 20, completed her level two exam at Intuitions hairdressing college in Harrogate, with a perfect score of 700 marks.   

During the exam, she was asked to do a number of hairdressing treatments, including half a head of highlights, a restyle and cut, and a curly blow dry. 

When asked why she chose to pursue hairdressing, Ms Ledgeway said:  

“I’ve always wanted to do it really, I like to do a bit of everything but I am quite social anyway.

“I wouldn’t be able to just sit at a computer all day.”

Michelle Oliver, director of Intuitions college, said it was “unusual” for someone to get full marks in the exam, adding:

“Both me and her educator are really proud, she’s worked really hard.

“It’s good for us at Intuitions, but also for the employer to have someone with that skillset from the apprenticeship programme”.

After completing her level two exams, Ms Ledgeway is now a fully qualified hairdresser, and currently works at Kelly Teggin Hair & Beauty in Knaresborough.

She is now hoping to move on to a further stage of qualifications, which she said are more advanced and creative.
