A new headteacher has been selected to lead St Aidan’s High School from September.
The Harrogate school has appointed Siân Dover to the role, from her current post of principal of Oasis Academy Lister Park in Bradford.
She was previously part of the leadership team that saw Nidderdale High School ranked within the top 100 schools in the country for securing outstanding GCSE outcomes.
Mrs Dover said:
“With the exception of my most recent school, I have always worked in schools in North Yorkshire. It is not only my home county, but also an area that I feel a strong affinity with.”
“My reason for applying to St Aidan’s, however, was much deeper than that. This is a school with a strong identity, a fantastic heritage and a community of students, staff and families that I felt it would be a real privilege to be part of.
“It is also abundantly clear that there is a huge amount for this school to be proud of, but I wouldn’t be a headteacher if I didn’t have a strong belief that I can help build on all of these strengths to help the school develop further in the future. The world that awaits our students is constantly evolving, and it is important that the education that we offer meets those needs.
“That is why leading the school is such a genuinely exciting prospect, and just like in my previous two jobs, I plan to be here for the long term.”
It will be the first time the school has been led on a permanent basis by a woman since its founding headteacher, Miss Hindmarsh, who was appointed in 1966.

“Not only does Siân have the expertise and experience to build on all of St Aidan’s strengths, but her Christian values and commitment to providing a nurturing and caring environment for every young person made her the perfect fit for our community.”
In a letter to parents, Mrs Wicks and Jane Goodwin, interim CEO of Yorkshire Causeway Schools Trust, said the new head would bring “significant senior leadership experience and knowledge of the current education landscape”.
They added:
“The committee is confident that Mrs Dover has the skills and experience needed to successfully lead St Aidan’s as the school begins a new chapter in its history.”

The school said candidates from across the country applied for the role of headteacher when it was advertised in January.
Geography and PE graduate Mrs Dover was selected through a two-day assessment by its governing body and board of trustees, as well as the Diocese of Leeds. Pupils, members of the school leadership team, and other headteachers in the Yorkshire Causeway Schools Trust (YCST) were also involved.
Mrs Wicks and Jane Goodwin, interim CEO of YCST, said she would bring “significant senior leadership experience and knowledge of the current education landscape”.
St Aidan’s has been without a permanent head since December 2021, when Chris Burt left through ill health. He was replaced by Chris Ives as acting headteacher, before David Thornton was appointed last summer on an interim basis.
In recruiting for the role, St Aidan’s acknowledged it had faced a “challenging” time over the last 18 months.
The school was rated inadequate in an Ofsted report published last January, following a visit by inspectors more than three months earlier. The report found four out of five areas to be ‘good’ but because the leadership and management were ‘inadequate’, the overall rating was also brought down.
However, a monitoring visit in May led Ofsted to return for a full inspection just two days later. The report, published in June, concluded the school was ‘good’, with pupil behaviour and its sixth form both rated ‘outstanding’.
Mrs Goodwin said the school was in “excellent hands” under Mr Thornton until September, and thanked him for his leadership while St Aidan’s waited for the “right moment” to recruit its new head.
New head sought for Harrogate infant schoolAn infant school in Harrogate is seeking a new leader to replace its outgoing headteacher.
Zoe Anderson, who has been at Oatlands Infant School since 2018, is moving away from the area and the school is now looking for its next head.
In a job description posted on its website, the school said:
“Our outgoing headteacher has built a high-performing, popular and purposeful school, which offers a very exciting prospect for her successor.
“You’ll join a school in great health, with strong systems, a thriving culture, and shared expectations of support and accountability.”
A website set up to recruit the new head describes the school as being “in an enviable position to embark on our next chapter with excitement and curiosity”.
It refers to the challenges of finance and says the school does not want to compromise its standards because of stretched budgets.
The site also refers to the next Ofsted inspection being “likely before the end of this academic year” – the last, in 2013, rated the school ‘outstanding’ – and says the new head would lead the response to its outcomes.
Oatlands Infant School is part of the Yorkshire Causeway Schools Trust, along with six other primary schools in the Harrogate district and one in Skipton, and St Aidan’s Church of England High School.
The school was last month awarded the Inclusion Quality Mark, recognising its work to be inclusive of people regardless of their background.

Deputy headteacher Kathryn Haddon said Mrs Anderson had made a “significant impact” since she joined the school.
She particularly highlighted improvements to the school building, including a new reception area, and developing stronger links with Oatlands Junior School.
She also said Mrs Anderson had developed the school’s vision of ‘Nurtured + Inspired = Happy’ and had delivered a legacy of wellbeing for staff, children and their families.

A Harrogate secondary school has begun the search for its fourth headteacher in two years.
St Aidan’s Church of England High School has set up a website outlining its vision for the next post holder after facing a number of challenges since late 2021.
The website says:
“The school has had challenges in the last 18 months, including a 2021 Ofsted inspection that highlighted concerns regarding safeguarding processes.
“But the school and the trust responded to this quickly and decisively, and we were delighted that the subsequent inspection in early summer 2022 both acknowledged this, and confirmed the many strengths of the school.
“Our commitment is that we will build on these strengths to re-establish the school’s judgement as an outstanding school.”

Since last summer, headteacher David Thornton has been in post on an interim basis, but has said throughout that he does not want to be considered for the permanent role.
The recruitment website said:

Potential candidates have until Monday, February 13 to apply, with interviews expected to take place in early March.
St Aidan’s has almost 2,000 students on role, including in its associated sixth form with St John Fisher Catholic High School.
The school became an academy in 2011. It then formed the Yorkshire Causeway Schools Trust, which now includes eight primary schools across Harrogate and Skipton.

“After our last permanent headteacher stepped back from the role, two interim heads have helped lead the school. The decision to appoint interim heads was a pragmatic response based on the changes to our Ofsted grading and headteacher recruitment cycles.
“Now that our Ofsted grading is clear and we are Good with Outstanding features, we have reached the right point in the school year to start a leadership recruitment process, and a national search to find our new permanent headteacher is underway.
“Initial feedback has been very positive, and we look forward at keeping our community updated as we go through the process.”
Richard Taylor Primary School in Bilton has received a ‘good’ rating by Ofsted.
The government schools inspector, which visited Richard Taylor in June, praised the quality of learning as well as how much children enjoy attending.
The report said pupils work hard to meet the high expectations set by teachers and that children with special educational needs were particularly well supported by a “broad and ambitious” curriculum.

“Pupils say that they love school and their friends at Richard Taylor primary.
“Pupils feel safe, and are safe, because staff look after them well and help them with any problems they may have.
“Teachers help them to do their best. They are well supported by school staff.”

The report praised the “calm and orderly environment” and said child welfare and safeguarding were well catered for. It said:
“Pupils say that bullying does not happen, but if it did, they trust that adults would deal with it quickly.”

Staff, it added, “are proud to work at the school” and “say that leaders support them well”.
Most parents say the school is a “great community to be part of” and feel supported by staff.
Founded in 1793
Richard Taylor was founded in 1793 and moved to its current site on Bilton Lane in 1973.
The 275-pupil school, which is a founding member of the Yorkshire Causeway Schools Trust, was last inspected in 2017, when it was also rated ‘good’.
The latest report highlighted “some inconsistencies in staff expertise to deliver phonics”, adding:
“As a result, some pupils in the earliest stages of reading are not competent at blending letter sounds to read a word.”
It said leaders were in the process of putting in place “a more systematic approach to the teaching of phonics”.

Andrew Symonds, who has been headteacher at Richard Taylor for 13 years, said:

“The report also clearly identified the strong duty of care and united vision for the pupils, based upon our Christian values, which is shared by everyone associated with the school.
“I would like to thank the children, parents, governors and leaders within the Yorkshire Causeway Schools Trust for their hard work and support which is reflected in this report.
“As a school we are ready to focus on the agreed targets for development as we prepare to celebrate 230 years as a learning community in Harrogate and our 50th anniversary on our current site.”
New headteacher for Harrogate primary school
Hookstone Chase Primary School in Harrogate is set to welcome a new headteacher this term.
Joe Cooper joins from All Saints’ Primary School in Ilkley where he spent three years as deputy headteacher.
Mr Cooper settled in Harrogate in 2005 from London. He has since developed his career in North Yorkshire, with short periods teaching in New Zealand and as a music specialist.
Mr Cooper said:
“It is a great privilege to have been asked to lead Hookstone Chase Primary School. We have a proud history as an inclusive school for all children – with space for everyone to grow and develop their knowledge, skills and abilities.
“Straight away this term we will be opening a brand new outdoor play and learning area for our youngest children who are just joining us. We are a school that is investing in the future.”

Hookstone Chase is part of the Northern Star Academies Trust, which includes four other Harrogate schools, as well as schools in Skipton and Keighley.
Its other Harrogate schools are Harrogate High School, New Park Primary Academy School, Starbeck Primary Academy and Willow Tree Community Primary School.

Harrogate independent school offers free places for Ukrainian refugees
A Harrogate independent school is offering free places to Ukrainian children displaced by war in their home country.
Brackenfield School, on Duchy Road, has already welcomed one child and another is set to join in September.
Staff are giving them extra support to make sure they feel safe and comfortable in their learning environment and “have a fair opportunity to thrive”.
Joe Masterson, headteacher at Brackenfield, said:
“We are privileged to welcome these extremely brave and resilient children into our school community and are doing all we can to ensure our new pupils are as much a part of school life as every other child.
“Everyone deserves an education in a safe and caring space and we’re proud to be hosting Ukrainian children in our school and making them part of the Brackenfield family.”

Mr Masterson said it was also a valuable learning opportunity for other students.
He added:
“They can learn and ask first-hand about Ukrainian culture, gain a better understanding of the world around us and see with their own eyes that giving a helping hand makes everyone stronger.”
It’s believed that 2.5 million children have fled Ukraine since the start of the war, many leaving everything behind and being displaced for months before arriving in a safe country.

Brackenfield is one of seven independent schools owned by Forfar Education to welcome Ukrainian refugees.
John Forsyth, chief executive of the Forfar Group, said its schools had a moral duty to support Ukrainian families as they settle into UK life.
He said:
“Forfar had taken the decision to offer free places to Ukrainian children fleeing conflict at the time the war broke out, so we’re proud to be leading the way for other independent schools considering doing the same.
“It’s important to show solidarity in times of crisis. We believe everyone has the right to a good and safe education, which is why we have opened our doors to those who need it most exactly when they need our help.”
Forfar has offered places in all of its schools, with no limit of the number of spaces available.
Knaresborough school pays tribute to former headteacherKing James’s School in Knaresborough has paid tribute to former headteacher John Forster, who has died.
Mr Forster was in charge of the school for 16 years from 1981 to 1997.
The school issued a statement saying how sad it was to learn of his death. Mr Forster had remained a part of the school and the wider Knaresborough community well after he left the school. The school’s tribute went on to say:
“In his time at the school he was responsible for starting the Knaresborough Fun Run, which ran with great success for very many years. He also established a school farm, complete with pigs and goats, which remained until 2004. His passion for his subject, English, kept him in the classroom, even as a busy headteacher.
“In 1990 he brought back the school magazine, The Chaloner, which had been dormant since 1974. His other great passion, tennis, allowed him to retain his connection to the school beyond his retirement.
“He devoted his considerable energy to the school long after his time as headteacher and we will miss his passion and enthusiasm.”
Mr Forster was also a chairman of Knaresborough Tennis Club, who led the bid to establish the tennis facilities that the school has today.

A Passion for tennis
John Forster had a love of tennis. As headteacher of King James’s School he championed the sport to the point where the school’s teams reached national and regional finals.
in 1985 he enthusiastically supported the founding of Knaresborough Tennis Club and offered the school’s facilities for the club to use.
In 2007, when Mr Forster was elected club chairman he pushed the idea of a new club wholly based at the school. The courts needed serious improvement but the project got the approval of the club, the school and the Lawn Tennis Association and the newly named Knaresborough King James’s Tennis Club was created.
In a tribute to John Forster, Ian Hargreaves, Knaresborough King James’s Tennis Club membership secretary said:
“John’s perseverance was key in getting the project completed in April 2011 to the satisfaction of all parties. After over 11 years of play on the new courts, club, school and LTA are very happy with the relationship, and optimistic that tennis opportunities in Knaresborough have now been guaranteed for the foreseeable future.
“Had the project not been brought to successful fruition, the club and organised tennis in Knaresborough would probably not have survived. The club has now outgrown its three courts, and four multi-use tennis/netball courts have been upgraded to cater for the increased demand.”
Mr Forster continued as club chairman until 2018 and was a committee member responsible for school liaison until his death. Mr Hargreaves continued:
“John’s invaluable contribution to tennis did not stop at Knaresborough. He was a councillor of the Yorkshire Lawn Tennis Association from 1999 to 2016 and had been president of the YLTA on two occasions. His special responsibility on the YLTA council was tennis in schools, and he was enthusiastic in organising, and persuading others to organise, schools’ competitions across the county.
“John will be much missed by the Yorkshire tennis world.”
Trial date for ex-Harrogate headteacher charged with making indecent images of children
A trial date has been set for a former Harrogate headteacher who is charged with two counts of making indecent images of children.
Matthew Shillito, 42, denies making 20 Category B images and 3,723 Category C images between December 3, 2012 and December 31, 2015.
He will appear before Harrogate Magistrates’ Court for trial on July 21, 2022.
A case management hearing at the magistrates’ court last Friday confirmed the date.
Shillito was remanded on conditional bail until the date of the trial.
He was appointed headteacher of Harrogate’s Western Primary School in 2019.
He was previously headteacher across the Goldsborough Sicklinghall Federation of schools.
North Yorkshire Police said in a statement in September 2021 that none of Shillito’s alleged offences related to his employment.

Families invited to explore top independent school Cundall Manor

Harrogate’s Ashville College appoints first female headAshville College in Harrogate has appointed Rhiannon Wilkinson as its first female headteacher in its 144-year history.
Ms Wilkinson, who was headmistress at Harrogate Ladies’ College from 2009 until 2013, will take up the position in September.
She will become the 11th headteacher in the history of the independent day and boarding school for boys and girls aged three to 18.
Richard Marshall, the previous headteacher, died in November aged 48 of cancer.
Elspeth Fisher will remain as acting head until September 1 when she will revert to her former position as a deputy head.
Ms Wilkinson said:
“I’m absolutely delighted to be joining Ashville College and returning to the Harrogate District which I always saw as my forever home.
“As a head over the last 12 years, I am confident that my versatility and commitment to serve young people and their families, whatever their background, need or ability, will enable me to succeed at Ashville College.

Ms Wilkinson, who graduated in modern history at St Hugh’s College, Oxford, has taught in – and led – schools in the UK, Hong Kong and Brunei, and most recently was the founding head of Whittle School Shenzhen in China.
After leaving Harrogate Ladies College she became head at Wycombe Abbey independent school in Buckinghamshire.
A statement issued by the school today said Ms Wilkinson was the unanimous choice of the board of governors.
Jamie Search, chair of governors at Ashville, described Ms Wilkinson as “an exceptional educational leader”, adding:
“In her four years at Harrogate Ladies’ College, she did an exceptional job and is credited with transforming the fortunes of the school.
