Further details of Ripon’s new Tesco store have emerged.
The supermarket, which has taken over the Marshall Way unit formerly occupied by Booths, confirmed the acquisition in May after the Stray Ferret exclusively revealed the news.
Shoppers bid farewell to Booths on July 20 after 16 years of operating in the city and work soon began on the renovation process.
Although Tesco previously confirmed all 95 staff members at Booths were given the opportunity to transfer their jobs, Tesco is now hiring a café manager and a 'colleague' at the Ripon store.
Exact rate of pay is not specified, but Tesco said it starts from £12.45 an hour for a ‘colleague’ role.
The working hours also vary, with shift patterns from 5am until 2pm or 3.30pm until midnight advertised.
Tesco has remained tight-lipped about the Ripon store opening since the news was announced and today (September 12) was no exception.
The Stray Ferret understands the store is set to open in November and, when we pressed the supermarket for an official opening date, a spokesperson said:
We’re always looking for the best ways to serve local communities and we’re excited to be opening a new Tesco Superstore in Ripon. We will keep the local community updated with our plans as we get closer to opening.
Booths issued a statement ahead of its closure in July:
Since opening in 2009 we have worked hard to refine the offer and improve performance at Ripon, but the challenges of significantly increased operating costs have meant that we cannot see a future where the store will be profitable under the Booths model.
Booths would like to thank all colleagues and customers for their support since the store opened over 16 years ago. We would also like to provide some reassurance that we have no current plans to exit any of our other stores.
The nearest Booths store is now Ilkley.
