Drivers were queueing on Wetherby Road this afternoon as Harrogate’s new Leon drive-thru opened.
Although the Mediterranean-inspired restaurant officially opens tomorrow, today it offered free food for customers who provided feedback.
The offer left drivers queuing to get into the restaurant car park at around 1pm today, particularly those turning right when coming from Harrogate.
People were also queuing outside the door of the Leon.

Some motorists were turned away as the queue for the drive-thru reached the entrance of the car park and began to effect traffic on the already busy Wetherby Road.
Eventually, staff placed a cone at the entrance to deter drivers from blocking the road.
The Stray Ferret captured a clip of the scene outside the Leon this afternoon, which you can watch below.
The restaurant will officially open to the public tomorrow, which will end a saga stretching back several years.
Originally, a Starbucks coffee drive-thru was planned for the site but it was refused by Harrogate Borough Council only for the decision to be overturned by a government inspector.
Concerns remain from residents who live near the site on how the drive-thru will affect traffic on the busy Wetherby Road.
Leon was bought by Blackburn billionaires the Issa brothers in 2021.
Glenn Edwards, Leon’s managing director said:
Aldi looking to open second Harrogate supermarket“Since opening our first drive-thru restaurant last year, we have been eager to grow this style of restaurant in order to bring Leon to more guests and allow them to experience Leon while on the go – something that aligns with our mission to bring naturally fast food that tastes good, does you good and is kind to the planet.
“Our opening in Harrogate is a massive achievement across all fronts.”
German supermarket chain Aldi has added Harrogate to a list of locations where it would like to open a new store.
Budget supermarkets have been making inroads into the Harrogate district in recent years. Aldi opened its first supermarket in Harrogate on Oak Beck Road in 2016 and another store in Knaresborough in 2021.
Aldi’s rival, Lidl, has had a supermarket in Knaresborough for several years and is currently building a new Harrogate store on Knaresborough Road. Lidl also has plans to open a supermarket at St Michael’s Retail Park in Ripon.
The cost of living crisis could see cheaper supermarkets continue in popularity and now Aldi has released a list of over 50 towns and cities, including Harrogate, that it is targeting in the coming years.
The company is offering a finder’s fee for anyone who recommends a suitable site, which it says should measure 20,000 sq foot, be able to accommodate 100 parking spaces and ideally be near a main road.
George Brown, national property director at Aldi UK, said:
“Despite our growth in recent years, some people still don’t have access to a local store, which is why it is our mission to continue on with our ambitious growth plans and change that.”

Harrogate’s Leon drive-thru to open on Friday
Harrogate’s Leon drive-thru restaurant on Wetherby Road will open on Friday from 7am.
The Mediterranean-inspired fast food chain will be open daily from 7am to 10pm, except Sundays when it will be open from 8am to 10pm. It will have 70 covers, including some outdoor seating.
The restaurant has created 20 jobs and will feature digital kiosks.
Alex Parkinson, a Harrogate local who was originally hired by Leon as the assistant general manager at the firm’s Gildersome drive-thru, is leading the team.
The company describes itself as being good for the environment and its menu includes “carbon neutral” burgers, rice boxes, breakfast muffins, egg pots and cakes.

Goldsborough Hall secures place in Michelin Guide“Since opening our first drive-thru restaurant last year, we have been eager to grow this style of restaurant in order to bring Leon to more guests and allow them to experience Leon while on the go – something that aligns with our mission to bring naturally fast food that tastes good, does you good and is kind to the planet.
“Our opening in Harrogate is a massive achievement across all fronts.”
The owner of Goldsborough Hall, near Knaresborough, has said she is “honoured and delighted” the venue has secured a place in the Michelin Guide.
The 16th century stately home has been chosen as one of six of the inspectors’ favourite new additions to appear in the prestigious food bible this month.
Co-owner Clare Oglesby praised the venue’s “extremely talented” executive chef Josh Barnes, who was appointed last September.
Ms Oglesby, who runs the hall with her husband Mark, said:
“Josh is an extremely talented chef, having retained a Michelin star at La Chapelle in London.
“It’s fantastic to get into the Michelin Guide after all the hard work Josh Barnes and his team have put in. It’s also a wonderful achievement to have been chosen as one of the inspectors’ choices this month.”
Mr Barnes was previously head chef at the Galvin brothers’ La Chapelle restaurant in London, where he retained its Michelin star and AA 3 rosette status. He was also awarded for having London’s best vegetarian and vegan tasting menus.

The chef grew up in the open countryside of Lincolnshire and developed a passion for cooking at an early age.
He enjoys foraging for mushrooms, wild herbs and flowers and other ingredients to create inspiring natural dishes.
Ms Oglesby said:
“His modern, French-based dishes are well-balanced and full of bold flavours – and his desserts are a highlight.”

Revealing some of their favourite new additions to this year’s Great Britain and Ireland Guide, the inspectors said of Goldsborough Hall:
“This grand, 16th century country house is set in a gloriously remote and peaceful setting and boasts delightful gardens and grounds.
“With a backdrop this stunning, the cooking risks paling in comparison, but it more than manages to live up to expectations.
“The set menu features ingredients from their own organic kitchen garden, mixing classic and modern techniques to showcase the skills and experience of the team.
“The modern, French-based dishes are eye-catching, well-balanced and full of bold flavours; desserts are a highlight.”
Ms Oglesby said she hoped the prestigious accolade would help put Goldsborough Hall on the map as a leading dining destination.
The dining room at Goldsborough Hall is open, including for non-residents, from Wednesday to Sunday, with a six-course tasting menu.
Playground in Ripon to finally reopen tomorrow after rat infestationA children’s playground in Ripon that was closed in September due to a “huge” number of rats eating leftover food will finally reopen tomorrow.
Ripon City Council officials shut Quarry Moor playground last year amid public health concerns caused by the rodents.
It said it collected a minimum of eight rubbish bags a day, which was “a constant food supply” to the rats.
But with half-term underway, the playground is now free from rodents and safe for children to play in.
The council posted the good news on its Facebook page today. However, it asked visitors to take any litter home with them to deter the rats from returning.
“We are pleased to share the news that Quarry Moor playground will be open from tomorrow.
“May we politely request that you take your litter home with you to avoid issues with rodents. This will ensure the playground remains open. Thank you for your cooperation.”

Green Shoots: Ethical raw dog food brand founded in Tockwith
We love our dogs in the Harrogate district, and increasingly owners are wanting to feed their four-legged companions more nutritious and organic meals.
One company making inroads in the market is Naturaw, which was founded in Tockwith in 2015 and has built a name offering ethically sourced and sustainably packaged dog food.
It’s grown from a small operation in Marston Moor Business Park to an annual turnover in the millions.
Its products are sold by more than 160 UK retailers and supplied directly to dog owners online.
Chris Broadbent, director, said Naturaw’s green credentials are its “raison d’etre” and help it stand out in a competitive market.
There is no plastic in its packaging and the meat they use comes from animals reared on high welfare farms.
A growing market
The UK dog food industry is worth £1.5bn a year but the market is dominated by brands selling processed wet and dry food on supermarket shelves.
Raw food is still a relatively small piece of the pie, worth £100m.
Naturaw’s core range of products includes chicken, duck, venison, beef and lamb meals. They are made up of 80% meat, 10% offal and 10% bone.

Naturaw’s raw chicken meal. It costs £2.80 per pack.
It’s more expensive than traditional dog food but Mr Broadbent said it’s in-keeping with what a dog is designed to eat. Raw food is said to give the dog’s coat a healthier glow.
Mr Broadbent said:
“The dog has really become part of the family and more thought is going into giving them healthier food.”

Plastic-free
Anyone who regularly buys pet food will know how much plastic packaging can end up in the bin.
When Naturaw was formed in 2015 founders Jess Warneken and Tom Johnson wanted to ensure it sold a plastic-free product.
The company recently achieved the prestigious B-Corp certification after a rigorous 18-month audit.
It means Naturaw is recognised globally due to its high social and environmental performance.
The tubs are made from fibre from carbon-positive forests in Scandanavia and the food is wrapped in wool, rather than polystyrene.
The lid is made from plants and the text on the packaging is even printed with vegetable ink.
It’s all compostable too, so you can throw empty packaging on with your garden waste.
Fierce debate
The debate over raw dog food has been fierce within the veterinary profession.
Unlike commercial food, raw meat products are not pasteurised to remove bacteria.
Some vets believe this bacteria can pose a risk to the dogs, whereas others say it is perfectly healthy.
Mr Broadbent said there has been some “scaremongering” about raw food.
“Some say it will turn the dog into a rabid animal and start baying for blood. There’s an awful lot of misinformation, so it’s about education.”
Growth
Last year, Naturaw expanded its premises and moved into the Thorp Arch Estate near Wetherby.
Mr Broadbent said he hopes the company will continue to grow as more consumers look to ethical products when it comes to their pets.

Harrogate cafe offers taste of Turkey“We’re all proud of our little business. Our ‘green-ness’ does make sense to the consumer, and the fact we have the B-Corp certification is a big feather in our cap.
“But ultimately its about the dogs, and the most healthy diet for them.”
Sirius is a new cafe on Beulah Street that offers homemade food inspired by Turkey.
Istanbul is said to have the world’s oldest cafe culture, and Cuneyt Yazicioglu wants to bring some flavours from his home city to Harrogate.
Dishes at Sirius include kumpir, which is a Turkish jacket potato with a wide range of toppings to choose from.
Homemade sweets include the pistachio-flavored baklava. Turkish coffee and tea are also available.

Mr Yazicioglu has lived in North Yorkshire for 24 years and previously ran a Turkish restaurant in Ripon.
Pictures of famous Turkish singers, actors and comedians adorn the walls of the cafe, which used to be a card shop and is next door to Costa.
It’s the ‘Turkish breakfast’ that takes top billing on the menu. It’s a twist on the English breakfast and includes feta cheese, olives, Turkish pepperoni and honey.
As well as offering Turkish treats, the kitchen serves English breakfast, sandwiches, pizza, paninis and omelettes.
Sirius is open from 9am to 5pm seven days a week at 9 Beulah Street, Harrogate.
The quirky new Harrogate café where customers can cuddle chihuahuasA quirky café where you can grab a slice of cake and cuddle a chihuahua is set to open in Harrogate this month.
Billed as ‘England’s first interactive chihuahua experience’, The Chihuahua Lounge is aimed at boosting mental health with pet assisted therapy.
The venue, on Knaresborough Road, is expected to open on weekends from Saturday, May 14.

Customers will be able to book a 50-minute session at the café, on Knaresborough Road, and chill out with a coffee in the company of six cute long-haired chihuahuas.
Picnic and her puppies Badger, Lambie, Potter, Peony and Lucy, all bred and raised by café founder Caroline Leather, will roam free within the building.
Ms Leather said she wanted to share the benefits that she gains from her own affectionate pack of chihuahuas.
She explained that this is how the concept of a ‘home-from-home interactive chihuahua experience’ with lounge seating, coffee, cakes and cuddles was born.
Ms Leather said:
“The Chihuahua Lounge is a friendly, safe haven, away from the hustle and bustle of modern life.
“We are passionate about animal assisted therapy, which has shown that spending time with dogs not only reduces your heart rate and blood pressure, but is good for mental health.
“We offer an extensive menu of hot and cold drinks, freshly baked cakes and have cosy sofas, arm chairs and foot stools, so you can kick off your shoes and curl up for a cuddle.”
The experience costs £10 per person. This contributes towards the cost of the specific qualifications needed to exhibit the animals, as well as the strict animal welfare and licensing laws.

For the safety of the dogs, only children over the age of six are permitted.
Ms Leather said:
“Our dogs love human attention and we have made sure that the café is a home-from-home for them.
“They also have their own private room where they are free to wander in and out as they please.
“We do not force our dogs to be in the lounge area with our guests. When the dogs are in the lounge space, they are there out of choice, and we intend to always keep it that way.
Ms Leather explained that the dogs also have weekly health checks and behavioural studies are conducted on each animal regularly to ensure their behaviour in the café demonstrates that of a happy and relaxed dog.
She added:
YouTuber raves about Knaresborough and Harrogate takeaways“If it does not, we take them out of the café environment.
“We have a set of house rules to protect the dogs welfare that have to be adhered to by all customers.
“We also limit the capacity of our café to ensure the dogs are not overcrowded.”
A YouTube star with nearly 500,000 subscribers has given glowing verdicts to two takeaways in the Harrogate district.
Danny Malin, the man behind Rate My Takeaway, visited the The Roast Inn, which is a roast dinner food truck at Knaresborough’s St James retail park and Starling Independent Bar Cafe Kitchen in Harrogate last week.
Mr Malin’s reviews can have a significant impact on trade, as occurred when he recently visited Harrogate’s Thug Sandwich.
His video review of The Roast Inn went live on Friday and already has 124,000 views. He gave it a glowing endorsement, describing the food as “a solid 10 … heavenly”.
The food truck, which has been based on the retail park for 17 years, sells roast sandwiches and roast dinners. Mr Malin opted for a turkey and stuffing sandwich and a roast pork loin dinner with a side of pigs in blankets for £14.
Sitting on his signature camping chair, he said:
“If you’re like me and you like a roast dinner, this is spot on. The gravy is beautiful, nice and thick, the pork is cooked to perfection and absolutely gorgeous. The whole dinner is smothered in gravy with bit of apple sauce, just delicious!”
“To me it’s just like eating heaven, my kind of meal.”

Moving onto the sandwich, he said the proportion of turkey to sauce and stuffing was “spot on”:
“That’s the one, you know what the thickness of the turkey is bang on, it’s not dry with all those sauces. Oh wow that is spot on, just amazing.”
Giving his final verdict on the Roast Inn, Mr Malin said:
“For me it’s probably one of my favourite takeaways for a while, a solid 10. I’m going to be coming back next time I’m here.”
Rate My Takeaway reviews Starling
On Saturday, his review of Starling went live and by today had 118,000 views. Mr Malin ordered a meat sweats pizza, Philly fries and a Mars bar slice for £22.50.

Mr Malin tucks in at Starling Bar and Kitchen last week.
Starting with the pizza, he said:
“That meatball topping is absolutely quality and the sauce is spot on. I’m getting a proper Italian vibe from those meatballs.
“The only thing is because the base is so thin the toppings can slide off but the flavour, oh my god. I’d describe it as a messy one.”
Whilst sat outside Mr Malin was approached by lots of local fans all keen to know where he’d been to review locally.
The Philly fries, which are skin-on fries topped with pulled pork, gherkins, barbecue sauce and cheese, also won praise:
“Ooh they’re nice them, the chips have got a bit of a crispiness and with the sweet barbecue sauce and the pulled pork its a beautiful flavour buzzing around my mouth.”
Describing the whole meal as “delicious “he gave Starling a 9.5 rating and said it only missed out on the 10 because the toppings fell off.
Fresh Mediterranean dishes a delight at Harrogate’s OlivetaThis post is sponsored by the food app Deliveree
Bukurie Lleshi makes the food, her husband Kol serves and takes orders, and their daughters, Diana and Elona help at the weekend. It’s a simple recipe, but perfect for the wholesome home cooking found in Oliveta.
Recently opened on Station Parade in Harrogate, Oliveta is the quintessential family-owned restaurant. The care and passion behind the menu are clear as soon as you walk through the door.
Family home cooking
Bukurie dreamed of opening the restaurant in Harrogate ever since she moved from Albania. She creates traditional Albanian cuisine as well as other Mediterranean favourites and is always experimenting with new menu ideas.
Her daughters help out on a Friday and Saturday nights when things get busy – something mum and dad greatly appreciate.
Bukurie creates dishes and tests them out on the rest of the family, most recently the creamy mushroom chicken has been a hit and will be making its way onto menus soon.
Bukurie said:
“We always work as a family, and it makes me very proud that we all work here. It means I can get some good feedback when I want to try a new dish, as I just serve it at home, and I can tell how much they like it by how clean the plates are!”
The inspiration for the food comes not only from their native Albania but all around the Mediterranean, with dishes from Spain, Italy and Greece. Customer favourites like the Oliveta Chicken, Stuffed Bell Peppers and Burek are always popular.
The restaurant has gained quite the following with customers returning time and time again to enjoy new dishes or their regular favourites.
